About TEDxProvidence

TEDxProvidence is part of the TEDx program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDxProvidence first appeared in Providence based on a TEDFellow requirement of TEDFellow Peter Haas to create a TEDx event in a city that didn’t already have one. Peter, who had recently moved to Providence, organized with the help of friends the first TEDxProvidence event in 2012. In 2013, Peter Haas, Cat Laine, Michael Gazdacko, Caroline Mailloux and Dani Grodsky formed the Providence Speaking Society (PSS), a Rhode Island non-profit to organize speaking events. PSS’s main role was to plan and execute the TEDxProvidence event. In 2015, Providence Speaking Society was awarded federally recognized 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status. The Providence Speaking Society has organized one TEDxProvidence event each year since 2012. Each event is based on a different theme, featuring between 10 and 20 speakers, performers, and entertainers from throughout Rhode Island. Community nominations help drive the speaker selection process, and feature a wide variety of great things people in Providence/Rhode Island are doing and contributing to the community in their own way. TEDxProvidence and the Providence Speaking Society are completely volunteer run and organized. They are supported by sponsorships, in kind contributions, and from TEDxProvidence event ticket sales. The current board members of the Providence Speaking Society are: Michael Gazdacko, Peter Haas, Kiara Butler, Arnell Milhouse, and Tobias Lederberg, Esq.

What is TEDx?

TEDx brings the spirit of TED’s mission of ideas worth spreading to local communities around the globe. TEDx events are organized by curious individuals who seek to discover ideas and spark conversations in their own community. TEDx events include live speakers and recorded TED Talks, and are organized independently under a free license granted by TED. Our event is called TEDxProvidence, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxProvidence event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
